‘I consider myself very fortunate to have chosen this profession. Daily I am inspired by the people that I work with, watching them grow in confidence as they become stronger in body and mind. I always encourage people to set the bar high and go for it; you’ll be amazed at what will happen.
I have been exercising and pushing my physical boundaries my whole life. I can remember doing push ups, sit ups and bicep curls in the sitting room at home when I was 6 years old. I have always loved exercise and encouraging others to push themselves past their limits.
I discovered CrossFit in 2007 and I knew instantly I had found my holy grail. CrossFit founder Greg Glassmans ground breaking article ‘What is Fitness?’ really struck a chord with me. I tried some of the benchmark workouts named Fran, Nasty Girls and Murph. I realised I was nowhere near as fit as I thought I was and that I had a long way to go to become a competent CrossFit athlete. Every day is a voyage of discovery, I am constantly learning, improving and becoming stronger.
Greg Glassman says ‘The greatest adaptation to CrossFit occurs between the ears’. Through CrossFit I have developed a mental strength that I trust will get me through all of life’s challenges, great and small. It is a mentality that many people inIreland could do with today.
I understand that nothing worthwhile in life comes easy. We must work each day to achieve our dreams and goals. CrossFit ties in beautifully with this philosophy. You are accountable for your actions, there is no place to hide, when you are in the depths of a workout with your fellow athletes and everyone is hurting and pushing their limits you can take comfort in the knowledge that you are surrounded by like minded people.
I have run a sub 3 hour Marathon, captained football teams to championships and tried every exercise programme known to man. Nothing comes close to CrossFit, it is the most rewarding experience I have ever had through exercise. If you are reading this you must have an interest in exercise or CrossFit. If you are not afraid of a little hard work, give me a call or email and allow me to open up a whole new exercise world to you.
Gerard McAuliffe.
